Why teach children the 10 Commandments

Is it just me or does it seem like America’s moral compass is spinning out of control?  What few standards that might exist are being eaten away.  Every year new TV shows go further, more graphic sex scenes, more violence, lying, and cheating.  Seems like there are no absolute rules about what is right and wrong. Why teach children the 10 commandments

What is America going to look like in 10 or 20 years at our current rate of change?  XXX rated films will be on prime time and we won’t be able to trust what anyone says.  Already it is hard to trust what politicians say.  I’m writing this on the eve when Obama is planning to declare amnesty to 5 million people who have entered this country illegally.  Now we are rewarding people who have disobeyed the law.  Apparently if you do it long enough it is no longer wrong.

We need to bring back a standard of right and wrong and teach children what that means.  America was founded on Biblical principles. I know that liberals would disagree but if they read our history written by the founders it would be hard for them to argue that point.

Teaching children the 10 Commandments is a start.  The fact is most church members cannot recite the 10 Commandments.  If we don’t know God’s laws how can we obey them?  In Jeremiah 31:33 it says: “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord. I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

This is why teaching children the 10 Commandments is so important.  Can you drive on the road safely if no one reads or obeys the rules?  Suppose people decided to not obey the stop light?  How many deaths would result?

The same thing is true for putting God’s laws in our hearts.  Even as Christians if we don’t know God’s 10 Commandments how can we obey them?

America no longer wants to hear about God’s Commandments.  Instead of You shall have no other gods before me we make ourselves gods free to do whatever we want.  The third commandments says you shall not misuse the name of the Lord our God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.  How many people want to hear or obey that?

Some of the others that we no longer follow are: Remember the Sabbath day, keeping it holy.  Now it is a day to sleep in and then it is like every other day.

The 5th commandment is to honor your father and mother.  Today disrespect for parents is found everywhere.

The 7th commandment says you shall not commit adultery but how many movies can you see that don’t include sex outside of marriage?

The Reverend Billy Graham says these are tough times to raise children.  We need to equip them for the battle that is ahead of them.  Putting the Word of God into their heart and mind is one of the best things that we can do.

We make some excellent resources to help children learn the 10 Commandments which I’ve listed below along with several other excellent resources.
