For a long time I was opposed to short term mission trips. They are expensive and it would be cheaper to hire someone in country to do the work but then I took my first trip. It opened my eyes and totally changed my mind. There is something about experiencing life in a third world country that had a profound impact on me.
I’d listened to missionaries talk and show pictures at church but experiencing it first hand was life changing. It gave me a passion for helping and changed my perspective on what I really needed. In many countries they are worried about living where in America we are concerned about our standard of living.
I came across a video that four friends, Matt, Andrew, Chris and Jon made when they decided to experience what it was like to live like 2.8 billion people in the world on $1.00 a day. They decided to go to Haiti a few months after the earthquake and experience what life was like in Haiti, living on $1.00 a day. The experience changed all of their lives and Matt and Andrew started an organization, Poverty Resolutions that sponsors mission trips to Haiti as well as providing ongoing support for the people of Haiti.
There is nothing like experiencing it first hand but this video is as close as you can probably get and if you came across this post because you are going on a mission trip to Haiti it will help you prepare for your trip.

Mission trips have had a profound impact in my life. It is no longer about me and what I can get but about what I can do to make a difference in the lives of children who need help. I’ve been involved in mission trips to the Dominican Republic and that is where I want to help. The pastor that we work with in Barahona Dominican Republic opened an orphanage to house boys ages 7 to 17, most of whom were on the streets. For $1.67 cents per day the Foundation Center of Helping Hands orphanage can feed, clothe, house and educate a child. The orphanage can house 100 children which means they need $5,000 a month.
As I write this there are 35 children and they have been struggling to gain additional funding. If you are reading this and feel called to help click you can visit their Facebook page and click the donate button. I started a website where the proceeds are going to support the kids. As of this writing it has only been up a couple weeks but we hope within 6 months that the site will provide a significant amount of their monthly needs.
God calls us to do what we can. Anne Frank was only 13 or 14 when she wrote: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”. Short term mission trips can change lives. Consider taking a family trip. It would be an amazing trip that your kids would not forget.
