I’ve been thinking about the question what does God want from me lately so I decided to write down my thoughts along with what other people have said. I’m getting close to 60 and God is still leading me but here is what I’ve learned over the years.
What does God want from me?
First God wants us to have a relationship with Him. He does not want us to be separated from Him, not in this life nor in the next. He loves us so much that he sent His son to take our punishment. All he asks is that we accept His gift and it is free.
For those people who accept His gift he calls us to do more. First he calls us to love Him and love others. Matthew 22: 36-40 says: Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
In the Old Testament we are told: This is what the Lord requires from you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to live humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8.
What does it mean to love God? When I think of that question I think about what it means to love anyone. If you love someone you’ll want to spend time with them. Their interests will become your interest. Their life will become your life.
The State Farm ad is a great example of how love can influence our life.
Our love for God must have the same influence on our life. If we love God we’ll spend time with Him and I don’t mean five minutes before we fall asleep at night. It won’t be an obligation, it will be something we crave, something we are excited about. Just like our relationships influence our life when we spend time with Him our life will change and we’ll see our relationships with people start to change also.
1 John 4:20 says: If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?
Those are the guiding principles that he expects every person who believes in Him to follow. The next question related to what does God want from me is what does He want me to do with my life?
This would be specific questions like to marry or not marry, who to marry, what school to go to, what type of job to take, etc. The answer to this question will be different for every person.
For the question about work I believe that you should look for something that you are passionate about. You can serve God in almost any job so look for something you enjoy doing. The Bible tells us to stay out of debt which will free you to serve God in ways you cannot do when you have debt to service every month.
Finally look at what you are doing in relationship to eternity. It is easy to get focused on things of this world but God wants us to look at life from the perspective of eternity. I’ve included a few videos that help answer the question what does God want from me. I hope you will enjoy them.
The final verse comes from Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Let us focus on Jesus and love Him with all of our heart, mind and soul. Life is short, don’t waste it. Another related post can be found here.
