Did you know that God has a special purpose for your life? In the Bible we see God working through his people. In Genesis there is the story about how God worked in Abraham’s life. Abraham made mistakes but he trusted God and because of that God blessed him.
God wants to work in your life also. Through the 10 Commandments and Jesus we’re told what we are given guiding principles. In Matthew Jesus is asked what are the greatest commandments.
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Later on in Matthew we are told to: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
These are the three principles that should guide our life if we are following Christ: Love God with all your hear, soul and mind, love others and bring them into a relationship with God. We can do that no matter where we work or live.
God will also guide us in specific circumstances. Sometimes that is through His Word. The Bible is filled with advice on living. Besides the ones above some others include: pray always, spend time with God, avoid debt, don’t get caught up in material things and contentment in life will come from following God, not accumulating a lot of stuff. Life is short, don’t waste a minute of it.
I read that the average church goer spends 10 minutes a day in prayer and thinking about God, and 4 hours watching TV. What would happen if we reversed it?
There are also verses that speak about God’s plans for us.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Philippians 2:3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Matthew 5: 13-16 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
God has a special purpose for your life
God also will direct us on specific directions in our life but it is important to clear our mind as much as possible from the influences of our culture. I just finished listening to Team of Rivals which was the story of Abraham Lincoln’s life. One thing that stood out was there were Christians on both sides believing that their cause was right. The result was the greatest loss of American life in any war.
You don’t know how much your culture influences your decisions until you experience life in another part of the world. That is one reason I encourage everyone to go on a mission trip out of the country. You’ll come back with a different perspective and hopefully with a life that has been changed.
I’ve included some videos of lives that have been changed as a result of their encounter with God and some videos that will challenge you to look at your life. As you watch them look for how God is working in their lives.
Nick Vujicic was born without legs or arms. When he was 15 and struggling with why God made him like this he read the story in the Bible about a man born blind. In the story found in John 9 Jesus is asked by his disciples: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. Nick realized that God could use even him, with no legs or arms for his purposes.
